bank

a bank is a financial institution that accepts deposits from the public as well as makes demand deposits while granting loans. lending activities can be done directly by the bank or indirectly through the capital market.

because banks play an important role in the financial stability and economy of a country, most jurisdictions exercise a high degree of regulation over banks. most countries have institutionalized a system known as fractional reserve banking, whereby banks hold liquid assets equal to only a portion of their current liabilities. banks are usually subject to minimum capital requirements based on the basel accords, an international set of capital standards, in addition to other regulations aimed at ensuring liquidity.

the banking renaissance in its modern sense developed in the wealthy cities of italy in the fourteenth century, but in many ways served as a continuation of ideas and concepts of credit and lending that had their roots in the ancient world. in the history of banking, several banking dynasties – in particular, the medicis, fuggers, welzers, berenbergs and rothschilds – have played a central role over many centuries. the oldest existing retail bank is the banca monte dei paschi di siena (founded in 1472), while the oldest existing merchant bank is the berenberg bank (founded in 1590).

history

ancient

the concept of banking may have originated in ancient assyrian and babylonian times, when merchants offered loans of grain as collateral within a barter system. during ancient greece and the roman empire, moneylenders added two important innovations: they accepted deposits and changed money. evidence of moneylenders is also found in the archeology of this period in iran, ancient china and india 2023.

medieval

the current era of banking can be traced back to medieval and early renaissance italy, in the rich cities of the central and north such as florence, lucca, siena, venice and genoa. the bardi and peruzzi families dominated banking in 14th-century florence, establishing branches in many other parts of europe. giovanni di bicci de’ medici founded the medici bank in 1397, one of the most famous italian banks. the republic of genoa established the first known state deposit bank, the banco di san giorgio (bank of saint george) in genoa, italy, in 1407.
